Many private properties in all sections of Maui are superb for weddings, vows, family reunions and other such events. The following listing represents only a tiny sampling. In the next section, Huelo and its estates and retreats are singled out for special attention as a haven for marriages, vows and honeymoons.
Blue Tile Beach House (4200 s.f., 6 bedrooms), just a ½ mile from Pa’ia (in Ku’au), and the grassy courtyard reaching to the beach are large enough to comfortably handle a wedding party of up to 50 people.
Spyglass House (Tavares Bay, Pa’ia), just a few hundred yards west of Blue Tile Beach House, consists of three oceanfront houses that sleep 12, spectacular views, beachfront, and ideal facilities for weddings and vows.
Koleana Retreat Center (Ulumalu/Haiku) is suitable for a large wedding and sleeps 25 people.
Wayne Estate is a beautiful oceanfront property in Spreckelsville that can accommodate a wedding event of up to 200 persons.
Olinda Country Cottages & Inn sits on more than 8 acres, with great views over the Central Valley and South Maui, surrounded by the 35,000-acre Haleakala Ranch. The Inn sleeps 15 in the mainhouse and cottage but the grounds are large enough to handle a wedding party of as many as 100 people. The wedding couple can honeymoon at a cottage while guests stay in the main house. A wedding coordinator can make arrangements for the whole event.
Old Plantation Oceanfront Home (Olowalu) can accommodate events with as many as 100 persons plus nearby Hale Ohi’a. The 170-year-old Olowalu Church is nearby these homes that lend themselves so well to weddings.
Red Palms (Kahana) is a unique facility in that it was built specifically for weddings, family reunions and other special events. The house accommodates 10 in 5 lovely suites and the lawn is perfect for weddings and other ceremonies.
Crystal Sea (Wailea) includes 8 bedrooms, 11 baths, 2 pools, spas, garden and a white sand beach directly in front.
Sea Blossom Estate (Wailea) beautiful and tastefully palatial, sleeps 14, with pools, waterfalls and jacuzzis on white sand Keawakapu Beach.
Wenner Estate (Waiehu) accommodates 50 people.
When you drive from Pa’ia and Haiku to Huelo and then down the peninsula, it becomes clear that Huelo is not for everyone. Retreats around Huelo’s shoreline are for romantics, people on their honeymoons, renewing vows, in love, wanting seclusion, who don’t care about glitz and nightlife and thrive on serenity and meditative walks in the rainforest. When humpback whales pay their annual visit to Hawaii and Huelo’s shorefront, between December and March, it’s hard to go anywhere, especially with the incredible views of the ocean and whales over Waipi’o Bay.
Huelo may feel like a separate world on Maui but it’s near some of Maui’s top attractions to the east and west. Pa’ia is just 15 minutes to the west on Hana Highway. Twin Falls is just a mile away and at Ho’okipa Park powerful waves roll in to create a mecca for windsurfers and a spectacle for people watching from Ho’okipa Overlook. In the other direction, about 7 miles east on Hana Hwy., 26-acres of the Garden of Eden offer nature trails, scenic views and picnic areas within a beautiful botanical garden.
Down an inconspicuous dirt road on Maui’s northern coastline, embraced by Waipio and Hoalua Bays, lies the hidden, unique enclave of Huelo, one of Maui’s most beautiful locations for weddings, honeymoons, renewal of vows and affirmation of partnerships. This dirt road winds counter-clockwise around Huelo Peninsula and dead-ends near the Huelo Point Flower Farm. From this road no sideroads or pathways lead to seaside cliffs and the spectacular oceanfront.
Oceanfront and ocean views from the forested Huelo shoreline belong to properties like:
A’apali Ocean Lookout at Pali Uli - a 22-acre property perched on the edge of a 300’ cliff above Hanehoi Falls, has a magnificent vista of the coast. A’apali is one of the most spectacular properties on Maui, situated in a gorgeous private valley that fronts on a quarter-mile of rugged coastline. A jungle stream leads to natural bathing pools before plummeting into the waterfall to the sea below. Nothing quite compares to sitting in a hot tub at the A’apali Cliffhouse surrounded by a private garden on a cliffedge deck gazing at the waterfall plunging through its gorge. This grand property and its tropical gardens can accommodate 10 guests and large groups for weddings, vows, reunions and other such events.
Hono Hu’aka Tropical Plantation - located in a sheltered cove at the edge of a 300’ cliff overlooking Waipio Bay, has a lovely nature trail that guests can walk before and after the ceremony. Hono Hu’aka, Valley of the Rainbow and Healing Waters, sits on 30 acres of gorgeous shoreline where it is easy for the Retreat to focus on the beauty and healing properties of nature. The cliffside cottage, poolside gazebo suite, Bamboo Cottages, Treehouse and Bunkhouse can accommodate a maximum of 30 guests.
Huelo Point Flower Farm - a lovely oceanfront property that can accommodate as many as 20 people in its main house, guesthouse, Carriage House and Gazebo Cottage. The tropical gardens and area around the pool are perfect for weddings and other ceremonies.
