Maui is blessed with more than two dozen of the most picturesque churches that you’ll see anywhere in Hawaii or on the mainland. Many of them are available to couples for weddings, vows and renewal of vows. In some but not all instances below, we indicate approximate fees for the use of churches and chapels. Contact the resort, churches, chapels or wedding coordinators to obtain the latest fee information and other necessary details for booking facilities and services.
The list of churches and chapels below is by no means complete. We’re not discriminating against any denominations or their churches. We know that the list does not include many Baptist churches and many of Maui’s Pentecostal Churches simply because we are not familiar with these churches and their policies regarding weddings for non-members. Most of the churches and chapels below are part of Perfect Days guide to Maui for all visitors simply because they are historic, picturesque or in scenic locations.
See http://www.mauime.net/sites-chapels.html for photos of many of these churches and chapels and fees for these churches and resort weddings. (This Web site was created by Maui Me, Inc., one of the wedding coordinators listed below, and is not an endorsement of the company or its services.)
Grand Wailea Resort Chapel (Wailea)
So perfect, it’s almost unreal, the Grand Wailea Resort Chapel, near Wailea Beach and the ocean is set in beautiful gardens in the very center of the resort with a gazebo, fountain and lawn seating for 100.
Holy Ghost Church
The precious, intimate, ornate interior under the white octagon belongs to one of the most unique small churches in Hawaii with a marvelous view of the coastline from the site.
Kahali’a Aloha Chapel (Kahana)
Beautiful in the Victorian style with stained glass windows of old Hawaiian quilt patterns, the cherry wood floors and mahogany interior furnishings give this church a wonderful look and feel.
The lawn of lovely Kaulanapueo Church, coral and cement exterior and green steeple are so perfect that it makes Huelo, its glorious botanical garden and retreat, B&Bs and vacation rentals all the more attractive as a setting for weddings and vows.
Kaulanapueo Church
Huelo has earned a Hawaii Visitor's Bureau marker on Hana Hwy. because of historical Kaulanapueo Church (1853) that, as you will immediately discover, is absolutely perfect for a wedding. When you, your mate, and guests walk through the odd, squeaky, metal turnstile entrance to the church, the outside world quickly is left far behind. All that remains is your vow and its witnesses.
The church’s perfect lawn, tended with such loving care, may be an even better place for a wedding or renewal of vows than the church itself. The coral and cement church provides a simple and affirming backdrop beneath its picture-perfect, plantation green steeple. The church has the same austere, stark interior that it had in 1853, filled with straight-backed benches quietly demanding attention to the minister’s sermon, but a little too harsh perhaps for the gentle, loving ceremony that you had in mind.
Near the entrance to the church is a small graveyard, each stone well tended and many inscriptions no longer legible. Collectively these tablets tell some of Huelo’s story -- a faded stone garden of memories that obviously is visited often and dearly cherished. At one time, at the turn of the 20th century, thousands of people lived in Huelo and built this church. In a sense, the graveyard is only symbolic of generations that made Huelo their home. Instead of distracting from a wedding ceremony, you and your guests should walk around the Kaulanapueo Church to visit this graveyard. Somehow your vows will feel even more precious as they absorb the serenity spread by the church into its environs.
Ka’ahumanu Church
A wedding at Ka’ahumanu Church brings you closer to old Hawaii because Wailuku itself is the only town on Maui that retains that spirit and pace of life. Afterwards, a reception on the lawn at the Bailey Museum would be lovely.
This picturesque church provides the ideal Makena/Malu’aka beachfront wedding. The combination of Keawala’i Church, its lawn, beautiful adjoining beach and ocean views, ample convenient parking and proximity of the Maui Prince Hotel, its Oriental Garden and superb food for all occasions recommends this location on Makena Road, especially when you want to have both a church and a beach as part of the ceremony.
A little church in North Kihei that offers much charm for small weddings.
Beautiful wedding venues at the Ritz-Carlton Kapalua include non-denominational Kumulani Chapel, the Gazebo and The Beach House Lawn, all near the hotel.
Lahuiokalani Church (Honokowai)
Built in 1850 the Ka’anapali Congregational Church has a beach across the street.
Palapala Ho’omau Congregational Church
In East Maui, 2½ miles beyond ‘Ohe’o Gulch (7 Sacred Pools), there is no more beautiful and spiritual spot on Maui than Kipahulu and the bluff overlooking the Pacific at Palapala Ho’omau Congregational Church (c. 1857) where Charles Lindbergh is buried. You and your guests will never forget this site.
St. Johns (Kula)
A quaint, lovely little church with room for 50 people has South Maui spread out below. The spacious grounds and retreat house can be used for a reception.
Waine’e/Waiola Church
The first stone church built in the Hawaiian islands, immortalized by James Michener, rebuilt 3 times (last in 1951) and renamed Waiola, this church is perfect for a wedding or exchange of vows in Lahaina.
Wananalua Church
Hana, one of the most beautiful places on Maui, has a church to match.
In Hawaii no Catholic weddings are performed outside of the church. Besides the Holy Ghost Church, Kula, other Catholic Churches on Maui that offer special locations for weddings and vows include:
