Wear sunblock and avoid sunburn.
In certain forested areas on Maui, cover all of your exposed skin with mosquito repellent containing enough DEET (35%) to protect you for hours.
Be wary of turning your back on or swimming in coastal waters that look tame and actually may be dangerous.
Paddle kayaks cautiously when you’re on your own in unfamiliar waters.
Be careful riding bikes on and off roadways, and especially on roads without bike lanes and narrow roads, with or without bike lanes.
Drive ATVs using all the precautions provided by tour guides.
Drive carefully, within the speed limit and obey other traffic rules. Maui’s police officers are courteous and pleasant but determined to enforce laws on the books. Tickets are expensive for every infraction.
