Packing
Plan for warm weather with some rain along the coast, cooler weather in Upcountry, especially in the evening, and very cold weather at the summit of Haleakala at any time near sunrise. Pack sunblock (35 SPF or higher), mosquito repellent (35% DEET), a light rain jacket, warm clothing for Haleakala, and shorts, light clothing and swim wear. Perfect Days will help you to find plenty of stores all over Maui to supplement your tropical wardrobe. Bring a cell phone if it works in Hawaii (AT&T has a great signal all over Maui with the exception of remote areas), a camera with ample memory or plenty of film (easy and cheap to buy on Maui) and a cap for sun protection.
Renting Bicycles and Other Gear
Gear for bicycling, surfing, windsurfing, ocean kayaking, snorkeling and scuba diving is rented by activity vendors in www.tombarefoot.com that lists all of its bicycle tour operators under “Biking Down Haleakala.” Several of these companies also rent bicycles (see http://www.tombarefoot.com/maui/bike_maui.html).
