Visit the antique and resale shops of N. Market St., Wailuku, especially on a Saturday market day, turn north (right) on Main St. to High St., and see the Ka’ahumanu Church, Bailey House and other historic buildings.

Visit the Maui Bake Shop in Wailuku for breakfast (and possibly to pick up a picnic lunch) early in the morning, drive to Iao Valley State Park to see the Iao Needle and Kepaniwai Heritage Garden, return to Wailuku for lunch at A Saigon Café or other local eateries, and then drive to the Haleki’i-Pihana State Historical Monument near Wailuku, to see the ruins of a huge Hawaiian heiau (temple).

Especially people traveling with children, join a walk with the Hawai’i Nature Center on ancient footpaths along the ‘Iao Stream into ‘Iao Valley to Hawaiian village sites and hear about history, legends, flora and fauna, and visit the ‘Iao Valley InteractiveNature Museum.

Follow the trail along the river up Waihe’e Valley to and over the Swinging Bridges and continue on the trail to see the walled amphitheater upriver.

Start early in the morning and follow the Waihe’e Ridge Trail up to Lanilili hilltop (2,500’) with a picnic table and great ocean and inland views of Waihe’e Valley. Return to Wailuku for many lunch choices or drive to Mañana Garage, the ethnic eateries in the food court in Queen Ka’ahumanu Center or Down to Earth for vegetarians in Kahului.

From 7am to noon on Saturday, visit the Maui Swap Meet (next to the Kahului Post Office, Pu’unene Rd.) where you’ll find an amazing number and variety of merchants whose products you probably won’t find anywhere else, and also locally grown fruits and vegetables. On Friday morning, visit the Farmer’s Market in Kahului’s Maui Mall where you can see and buy the most popular flowers, fruits and vegetables cultivated on Maui.
