Northwest Coast Adventures

waterfallIf you can tear your kids away from Kapalua Beach, they’ll forgive you and tell all of their friends that (in winter) they saw huge waves at Slaughterhouse and Honolua Bay and (in summer) discovered incredible snorkeling at Honolua Bay. Then, after driving some more, way out near a lighthouse they hiked to a huge geyser (Nakalele) coming out of a blowhole. After that their mom and dad drove to some huge lava swimming pools and they swam in one of them while the surf pounded all around. Quite an adventure! But the adventure – and the really scary part -- just started.

The kids’ gutsy dad or mom drove on an awesome narrow, curvy road down a mountainside to a little Hawaiian village (Kahakuloa). Wow! And when the family drives into the village, a little blue wagon is waiting with pretty good shave ice. Just when the kids thought they we’re heading back to “civilization”, mom or dad announce that they plan to continue up the narrow curvy road between two really high hills (Kahakuloa Head and Pu’u Kahuli’anapa). The views are fantastic but the kids have had enough adventure driving for one day. Everyone agrees that they don’t want to drive back home on the same road. So the family continues driving on to Wailuku and Kahului. Presumably by this time everyone is starved for dinner and fortunately there are lots of moderately priced dinner choices for every taste in Wailuku and Kahului.
