Lana'i

Daytrips on Lana’i start where the ferry or other boats arrive at Manele Bay, next to Hulopo’e Bay, one of the great beaches of Hawaii. The closest attractions are Kaunolu to the west and the Luahiwa Petroglyph Field to the northeast. Other attractions including the Lodge at Koele are reached from Lana’i City: Kanepu’u Preserve, Garden of the Gods, Polihua Beach to the northwest and Shipwreck Beach and Keomuku Village to the east.

dolphinsOnly steps from the Expeditions Ferry dock, Hulopo’e Beach can keep kids entertained all day with safe swimming, a protected marine preserve full of colorful tropical fish, a pod of spinner dolphins playing in the vicinity and some of the best lava-rock tide pools that you’ll find anywhere in Hawaii.

Hulopoe Beach and the tidepools are reason enough for a daytrip with your kids to Lana’i. Otherwise, you have a couple of other excellent choices:

  1. package up a daytrip to Lana’i on the ferry or a Trilogy sailing vessel with a 4WD vehicle so that you and the kids can tour the island on your own or otherwise take a guided 4WD tour (see http://www.tombarefoot.com/maui/lana’i.html)
  1. Lana’i EcoAdventure Centre can arrange for an ocean kayaking, hiking and 4WD excursion around the island that includes the Garden of the Gods, deserted beaches, historic villages, petroglyphs, and maybe some hiking on remote beaches such as Shipwreck and Polihua or on the Munro Trail, perhaps a downhill bicycling tour
  1. After spending time at Hulopo’e Beach, walk over to the Manele Bay Hotel, have lunch and pool time at the Pool Grille or catch the shuttle for Lana’i City where you can tour the town, have lunch at the Blue Ginger Café or Pele’s Other Garden, catch the shuttle again for a visit to the Lodge at Koele and hike through its Nature Trail before returning to Manele Bay for the trip back to Lahaina.
