Hanakao’o Beach to Kahekili

surfingDon’t bother looking for a beach in Lahaina itself that will make the kids happy, even though there are several beaches, some decent surfing spots and good snorkeling at Mala Wharf. Take the kids directly to snorkeling at Black Rock at the north end of Ka’anapali Beach or near Hanakao’o Beach bordering on the south end of Ka’anapali. Depending on the age of your children, snorkeling around Black Rock may keep them busy all day. Otherwise, drive a little further than Black Rock to the parking lot for Kahekili Beach Park, another good picnic location, which has showers, restrooms, picnic tables, BBQ grills and shade trees. The kids will really enjoy the sandy bottom and lovely water for swimming and snorkeling, especially in the early morning.

Places to Eat
If you stay in Ka’anapali for the day, you’ll find lots of tasty meal choices for kids:

  1. Pizza Paradiso at Whaler’s Village and, for a treat (for you, too), Hula Grill or right next door the Beachside Grill (Leilani’s) and the Rusty Harpoon.
  2. Ka’anapali Mixed Plate Restaurant at the Ka’anapali Beach Hotel is a very family-oriented buffet for breakfast, lunch and dinner (where you can take advantage of early bird specials, 4-6pm). If you want to introduce your kids to Native Hawaiian foods there’s no better place on the West Coast to do so than the three-course dinner at the Hotel’s Ticki Terrace Restaurant.
  3. Not at the beach, right at the entrance to the Ka’anapali Resort and kind of hidden downstairs below Giovanni’s Tomato Pie, a family-style Italian restaurant that serves pizza, is Jonny’s Burger Joint and its “monster burgers.”
  4. Right across from the Puukolii Train Station in Ka’anapali, where the Paniolo Express Dinner Train starts Tuesday and Thursday nights, is CJ’s Deli & Diner that serves three meals a day suitable for families and sell take-out.

Nothing matches Kahekili Beach for younger kids until you get to Napili Bay and, even better for protected swimming, Kapalua Beach. Both of these beaches will appeal tremendously to kids of all ages. Pick up a picnic lunch at the Honolua Store or Honokowai Okazuyi Deli since kid-friendly restaurants are scarce north of Napili Plaza that includes the full-serve Napili Market with a deli counter. The whole family will enjoy breakfasts and lunches at these restaurants and eateries north of Ka’anapali:

  • China Boat, 4474 Honoapi`ilani Road (behind the Kahana Gateway)
  • Fish & Game Brewing Co. & Rotisserie in Kahana Gateway Shopping Center
  • Gazebo in the Napili Shores Resort
  • Honokowai Okazuyi Deli near Honokowai Beach on Lower Honoapi`ilani Road
  • Honolua Store on Office Rd. for take-out lunches
  • Maui Tacos and Mama’s Ribs n’Rotisserie in Napili Plaza
  • Nachos Grande in the Honokowai Marketplace
  • Sea House Restaurant at the Napili Kai Beach Resort
  • The Fish Market, 3600 Lower Honoapi`ilani Road, right near the Pizza Hut, which is another choice
