PERFECT DAY #49 -- GOLF

The Experience at Koele

golfThis traditional par-72 course, designed by Greg Norman with fairway architecture by Ted Robinson, has very different front and back nine holes. Mother Nature reigns throughout: You'll see Cook Island and Norfolk pines, indigenous plants, and water--lots of water, including seven lakes, flowing streams, cascading waterfalls, and one green (the 17th) completely surrounded by a lake. All goes well until you hit the signature hole, number eight, where you tee off from a 250-foot (76m) elevated tee to a fairway bordered by a lake on the right and trees and dense shrubs on the left. After that, the back nine holes drop dramatically through ravines filled with pine, koa, and eucalyptus trees. The grand finale, the par-five 18th, features a green rimmed by waterfalls that flow into a lake on the left side. To level the playing field, there are four different sets of tees. Facilities include a clubhouse, a pro shop, rentals, a practice area, lockers, and showers. Next to Koele Lodge, 800-321-4666, 565-4653, green fees $150-$200

The Challenge at Manele

Designed by Jack Nicklaus, this is one of the most challenging courses in the state. Check out the local rules: "No retrieving golf balls from the 150-foot cliffs on the ocean holes 12, 13, or 17," and "All whales, axis deer, and other wild animals are considered immovable obstructions." That's just a hint of the uniqueness of this course, which is routed among lava outcroppings, archaeological sites, kiawe groves, and ilima trees. The five sets of staggered tees pose a challenge to everyone from the casual golfer to the pro. Facilities include a clubhouse, a pro shop, rentals, a practice area, lockers, and showers. Next to Manele Bay Hotel, 800-321-4666, 565-2222, green fees $150-$200.

Cavendish Gold Course

For visitors staying at the Lana’i Hotel and local vacation rentals, one of the best kept secrets on Lana’i is the "Cavendish Gold Course," a FREE community 9-hole golf course on the edge of Lana’i City, beautifully maintained, and right next to, "The Experience at Koele". Believe it or not, you just show up and tee off. Usually there’s no waiting at all.
