Hana & East Coast

Wai’anapanapa State Park

In Hana, Honokalani Black Sand Beach in Wai’anapanapa State Park is the beginning a hike (more than just a walk) along the 3-mile King’s Highway coastal lava footpath to Nanualele Point and Hana Bay. (The problem with this hike, of course, is getting back to your car, unless you can arrange for someone to pick you up.)

Hana Bay

Reached from Hwy. 360 and Ua Kea Rd. (just past MM 34), Hana Bay and its gray sand beach is a pretty place to walk from Hana Pier, where you can get a snack at Tutu’s, on the red cinder trail along the shoreline out to 400-foot Ka’uiki Head, the birthplace of Queen Ka’ahumanu, Kamehameha the Great’s favorite.

Red Sand Beach

Follow Ua Kea Rd. to almost the end and park in public parking near the baseball field. Walk between the Hotel Hana Maui cottages and the Hana Community Center. Enter a narrow (slippery) trail along the south face of Ka’uiki Head to beautiful Red Sand Beach for walking a picnicking.

Koki Beach & Hamoa Beach

Drive on Hwy. 360 past Hana to a left turn on Haneo’o Rd. for Koki Beach Park on your left. Park on the side of the road, walk the beach and enjoy the views. If time is a consideration, continue driving on Haneo’o Rd. just a quarter-mile around the point to beautiful Hamoa Bay for a glorious stroll along its white sand. One of the most beautiful strands in Hawaii, you’ll also find restrooms, showers and some food sold by the Hana-Maui Hotel at a stand.

‘Ohe’o Gulch Shoreline

At Haleakala National Park, cross the bridge and turn left on the dirt road to the camping area and park. Follow the shoreline from Kuloa Point south (right as you face the water) towards Ka’u Bay and Maka’aikuloa Point.

Haleki’i Bay

Heading east towards Hana on Hwy. 31 from Ulupalakua or west from Hana to Kaupo, turn toward the ocean on the dirt road near MM 35 down to Hui Aloha Church. Walk around the spectacular setting and Mokulau Beach and Haleki’i Bay. As you face the water, you can walk to the right on a boulder beach path for miles to Waiuha Bay. (As described elsewhere, beach, bay and church also can be reached by helicopter, but you will not have as much time to spend on the ground.)

Nu’u Bay and Nono’u Bay

Drive on Hwy. 31 between Kaupo and Ulupalakua, turn oceanside on a dirt road near MM 31 through an open green gate (close it behind you), and drive to a parking spot. Walk along the cliff to see petroglyphs, walk to your right (as you face the ocean) from Nono’u Bay to Nu’u Landing in Nu’u Bay, site of an ancient fishing village.
