Kihei Kahuli Wailuku Pa'ai Makawao Lahaina Ka'anapali Wailea Kapalua Hana

Hana

Like Hana itself, shopping in town is small-scale, low-key and has a distinctive character. Before arriving in Hana, you’ll pass Hale ‘Ohana Mahi’ai, a stand that sells tropical fruits and flowers and Nahiku Ti Gallery selling locally made crafts. In town, you’ll find more small gift, flower and craft stores like Lauhala Crafts and Ohana Lei & Flowers in the Hana Ranch Restaurant and store complex, across the road from Hasegawa. Not far from beautiful Wailua Falls, Wailua Valley Fruits (only open noon-4pm, Sat-Wed) sells tropical fruits and yummy baked banana bread.

Besides the Hana Cultural Center & Museum, the main cultural and art attraction in town is Hana Coast Gallery (248-8636) in the Hotel Hana-Maui. Beautifully designed, very serene and low-key, the Hana Coast Gallery in the Hana-Maui Hotel is one of the finest art galleries on Maui specializing in the works of Hawaii’s artists. Patrick Robinson, Managing Director, and his knowledgeable assistant, Alesia Chow, can take you through the Maui art scene and its artists in congenial ways that you will appreciate and long remember. (See the artists index and other information in http://www.hanacoast.com/).

In addition to shopping for art:

  • visit Hamoa Beach or trek to Red Sand Beach
  • hike from Fagan’s Cross across the Hana Ranchland
  • hangglide above Hana’s beautiful coastline or kayak along the coast
  • tour ‘Ohe’o Gulch, Kipahulu rainforest or the Hana coast on foot or horseback
  • make an appointment for Wellness Services at the Hotel Hana Maui

Massage therapies or all kinds (Lomilomi, Shiatsu, Reflexology, Thai, Hot Stone, and others), perhaps a combination, energy balancing treatments, facials, body and skin care treatments at the Hotel Hana Maui are as good as any offered on Maui. For a great Hana vacation, stay at the Hotel Hana Maui Hotel, use these wellness services, join outdoor activities arranged by the Hotel that extend from the Kahanu Garden to Kipahulu, and spend leisure time discussing art with Patrick and Alesia at the Hana Coast Gallery.

Hasegawa General Store(Hana Hwy.)

“Upon the island of Maui, far away from Waikiki,
there is a place called Hana that is heavenly,
and when you go there, you got to see
the Hasegawa General Store"
(George Paoa Trio Live, Hula Records, 1992)

This song about the legendary Hasegawa General Store (established in 1910) goes on to say that "You just name it - they have it there - in the Hasegawa General Store". On August 14, 1990, Hasegawa General Store and the Hana Gas Station burned to the ground. Fortunately nothing can hold Hasegawa’s back and the store was open for business again in 1991 in the old Hana Theater.

Now in its fourth generation, the aisles of Hasegawa once more are choked with every imaginable type of merchandise including every tape and CD that mentions Hana and the best books about this unique town. Hasegawa carries a large and colorful selection of pareus (wraparounds), organic dried fruit from Ono Farms, Kipahulu Estate Coffee (try it and compare with Kona’s best) and souvenir merchandise with logos and designs only found at Hasegawa’s.

Hana Maui Hotel’s dining room, the Hana Ranch Restaurant for an excellent lunch buffet or takeout, Up in Smoke BBQ for grilled and smoked fish kabobs or Kalua pig sandwich, and Tutu’s snack bar for plate lunches, saimin or hamburgers will take care of most visitor’s needs on day-trips or for a few overnights.
